On Friday the 27th of November, a new report Report on racism and discrimination in international football will be presented in a press conference at 3pm at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, Place de Fontenoy. UNESCO’s Director-General, Irina Bokova, and the President of Juventus Football Club, Andrea Agnelli, will attend the presentation of the report by the authors.
Following their research work on the FREE Project, Albrecht Sonntag et David Ranc from the EU-Asia Institute at ESSCA, had been mandated by the UNESCO to write this report that would take stock of what has been done and is being done against racism and discrimination in professional football, examine ways to assess actions undertaken and envisage further, complementary actions, as well as offering examples of best practices.
Under the coordination of UNESCO and with the support of Juventus, the Report is the fruit of research and surveys involving an international team of experts, researchers, football managers and officials.
In her foreword to the Report, Irina Bokova argues that sport provides a unique platform to promote the values of intercultural dialogue and understanding, as well as gender equality, while reinforcing social inclusion. However, Ms. Bokova cautions that sport can also be exploited to divide and discriminate.
