New Developments, Challenges, and Outlook

Date: Friday, 8 April 2022, 11:00-12:00 CET

In the past two decades, China has been one of the fastest and most invested countries in the world’s digital development. However, the US-China trade war, the COVID-19 pandemic, the government’s crackdown on big-tech companies, and the introduction of the metaverse and innovative technologies have all reshaped China’s digital transformation.

In particular, personal information leakage, the monopoly and disorderly expansion of some industries challenge the realization of the “common prosperity” goal proposed by China’s leadership. China has announced in its 14th 5YP (2021-2025) targets to increase the contribution of core digital economy industries to 10 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) by 2025. The plan emphasizes several digital areas such as digital governance, smart cities, industrial digital transformation and innovations. The Digital Services Act and the Digital Markets Act passed by the EU also affect the development and governance of the European digital economy.

Against this background, the 9th research seminar jointly organised by ESSCA Shanghai and the EU*Asia Institute aims at contributing to the current lively discussion on the digital transformation in China. We invite experts and scholars in this field to address these challenges and to discuss political and economic logic in China’s policy intervention, the digital competition between China and overseas counterparts, and the challenges and potentials of foreign companies in China.

Guiding questions:

Recent developments:
  • What are the recent main developments in digital transformation in China (political, business, and academic perspectives) and Europe?
  • How China’s ‘Big Tech crackdown’ will impact the development of the digital economy in China? How will big-tech companies and other intermediaries (Fintech, VC, etc.) respond to these challenges, and what future trends are likely to be generated?
  • How has the outbreak of Covid-19 affected the digital transformation in China and globally? What will digital development in the post-epidemic era be like?
  • What digital innovation in China has lessons for the development of digital industries in other countries?
Prospects/outlook:
