Following the recent Research Seminar in Angers with presentations of ongoing research on different Asian countries, the EU-Asia Institute is pleased to announce its next Reseach Seminar connecting different threads of EU-China issues.

The seminar will be the opportunity for ESSCA researchers to present an attractive spectrum of EU-China relations in their current research.

Lingfang Song will speak about her research on Cognac, a product from provincial France sold in the entire world, drawing a comparison between the consumer behaviour of Chinese and American customers.

But France not only exports its quality products to China, but also its know-how on the gastronomy sector. Elite migration of cooks to global cities like Shanghai, for instance, is a niche of its own (note that the word « niche » itself is another successul French export, although a linguistic one). It is currently explored within an international project funded by the Open Research Area. Associate researchers Hélène Le Bail (CNRS and ESSCA) and Aël Théry (EHESS and ESSCA) will present their findings so far.

Miguel Otero Iglesias, (Royal Elcano Institute and ESSCA) will look at flows in the opposite direction, by looking at the steadily increasing amount of Chinese foreign direct investment in Europe. Perceptions on the extent to which these investments are welcome differ significantly with regard to the countries and economic sectors concerned. As Miguel says in the title of his contribution, they oscillate between « a blessing or a curse ».

This time, we move to the ESSCA Paris campus in Boulogne-Billancourt (access map here).

The event is scheduled on Thursday 23 March, 13:30-16:30 in Room P605.

All interested colleagues and students are most welcome!
